Managing Widespread Pain In Fibromyalgia

Chronic, widespread pain can often be the hardest and most frustrating challenge of living with Fibromyalgia. Coping mechanisms often fail because people with Fibromyalgia often have difficulty explaining to others what they are going through. They are quick to avoid stressful situations, and because of deep-seeded depression, begin to sink into a feeling of helplessness.

Typically, people with Fibromyalgia complain of “hurting all over” and because there is no known cure for Fibromyalgia, there is no way to remove the pain. Managing the pain is the only option given to sufferers with this medical condition.
Support groups offer plenty of encouragement, but if someone suffers from widespread pain, he or she is the only person that can decide what treatments and management techniques work best for them.

Relaxation exercises, heat therapy, self-hypnosis, stretching exercises, medications, and self evaluation with the ability to develop a personal pain analysis of a person’s own pain are often recommended in controlling and being in control of the pain. People with Fibromyalgia must learn to describe their pain to physical therapists and their family physician. Keeping a journal of all activities and medications along with any noted difference before or after the activity or change in medication is very helpful when trying to pin point what works and what doesn’t.

One of the most disabling effects of widespread pain is the ongoing daily existence of fatigue. Most people who deal with Fibromyalgia must accept the fact they will wake up every morning feeling tired. For people battling FMS, (Fibromyalgia Syndrome) everyday activities are often difficult. Preparing meals, walking to the mailbox, putting on make-up all seem overwhelming and drain what energy the person has available.

Managing Widespread Pain is very complicated because in order to do it effectively, people with FMS must plan everything ahead of time. Ordinary tasks must be prioritized, often even handed over to someone else who is willing to help. In corporations, often the phrase, “work smarter, not harder,” is used as a motto. In the lives of people dealing with FMS, this is something they must realize can vastly improve their quality of life, so they must plan ahead.

In developing a plan to manage pain, the person living with the pain should speak out about the medications they need to make their lives more comfortable. Read up on the medications available, and ask for specific medications by name. Zoloft, Sinequan, Flexeril, Prozac, Xanax, Klonopin, Ambien, and many others are medications that may provide FMS sufferers with the relief they need temporarily. Often some of these medications can help significantly more than a temporary fix so people with the pain need to talk to their doctors about what is working for them.

Flexibility and Creativity are two important elements in managing widespread pain and living a more productive, energetic, and happy life. The person, who believes in their ability to manage FMS, will be able to live a more fulfilling life while managing their daily activities at their own pace.

From Sluggish To High Energy

If you feel like your “get up and go has got up and went” it’s time to pick yourself up and find energizing ways to make you feel better. A lot of the reasons we begin to feel so sluggish is because we simply need the right nutrition to add the spunk to our walk again. If you have been feeling a bit under the weather, here are some ideas to add to your overall health and nutritional needs:

VITAMIN B12 A deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to anemia and a lot of serious complications. This can lead to tiredness, listlessness and many other problems that might deplete your energy. You can buy sublingual B12 for a quick fix and add it to your overall vitamin regimen or you can eat B12 enriched foods which include a large variety of breakfast cereals. Other sources for Vitamin B12 include milk, eggs and cheese. Include Vitamin B12 and notice your increased energy within days! Check your local pharmacy for B12 supplements.

ACAI BERRY It’s just a little berry that packs a powerful punch. Oprah listed it as one of the top 10 super foods for age-defying beauty. This berry will increase your energy and improve mental clarity as well as many other helpful and healthful benefits! Find Products that have the ACAI BERRY as an ingredient, it is a life-changing super food that your body needs! Health drinks flood the internet that have the Acai Berry as one of the active ingredients. Fruta Vida International and Monavie offer the most flavorful drinks on the market today.

BEE POLLEN Considered one of “nature’s most perfect foods”, Bee Pollen fights problems associated with allergies, aids in digestive problems, and will increase your energy pronto! Check your local Health Food Stores, Wal-Mart, or your local or online Pharmacy.

VITAMIN D If you are feeling run-down, scramble up some eggs for breakfast and grill some chicken for dinner because eggs and poultry will certainly help to replenish the Vitamin D your body needs to feel energized!

YERBA MATE In addition to gaining overnight success as an effective appetite suppressant, Yerba Mate boosts energy with several other claims to a healthier way to live your life to the fullest! Some drinks that contain the Acai Berry also contain Yerba Mate.

In addition to the nutritional suggestions listed above, make sure you are getting a recommended 8 hours of sleep per night when you are not at your best. Cut back on your caffeine intake, especially at night. Diet changes may be necessary in order for you to experience an overall increase in energy. Stock up on fruit and vegetable juices and take time to fix healthy meals at home instead of rushing out to your local Fast-Food Restaurants.

While you try different things to increase your energy level from the nutritional standpoint, implement a scheduled exercise routine to get you up and moving. You’ll feel better once you start moving, eat healthier, and provide your body with the nutrients you may be missing!

Fitness For The Busy Mom

Moms have a tough time. They are the cook, the maid, the taxi driver, the teacher, the referee, and the list could go on. If you’re a mom, you know how to get things done for everyone else, but chances are, you don’t take care of you. In the day where children keep parents on the go, it is hard to do the things you’d like to do.

School schedules, car pools and after school activities combined with household chores and a full-time job doesn’t allow for much time to exercise. However, that excuse is no longer good enough. Today’s mom knows how to get things done. They can squeeze in a last minute dentist appointment for little Teddy and show up without a moment to spare for a class play that little Tommy forgot to mention. Super mom can always find time to do whatever needs to be done to run a happy home for all of the occupants.

So the “I don’t have time” doesn’t fly anymore. In fact , moms everywhere should be embarrassed to use the excuse when a real mom knows, if you really want to do something it’s like that Divine Sisterhood stuff , scoot on over , because here comes mom!

Taking care of yourself with plenty of rest and exercise should just be one of those little things that you mark on the calendar and do. In fact, do it now. Mark in your day planner or on the dry-erase board your “me-time.” Then, dust off that tennis racket and head on out for the courts with one of your girlfriends, or join a Fitness Center, or take up walking for overall health and fitness. Procrastination is a word that has no meaning for moms wanting to do something nice for their children, the same should apply for what you want or need to do.

Diversify your fitness schedule to include solo walks, tennis matches with girlfriends, and horseback riding with your husband. Be creative in planning your week ahead. If you know that on Monday you have to pick up your daughter from school at 3:00, but your son gets out at 2:30, make proper use of your time and throw your Nike shoes in a gym bag and walk while you wait. If your daughter has a volleyball practice 25 minutes across town at the high school, then take your swimsuit and use the school’s swimming pool to swim laps. Most schools don’t mind if you call ahead and some even offer free swims on certain days of the week.

The important thing for you to remember is that because you are a mom, you may have to jump in and take advantage of a thirty-minute window just to have time to exercise. Be prepared for those opportunities and learn to expect the unexpected and take care to use the time wisely. If your son’s football practice is held over 45 minutes, continue walking around the track until you hear the sweetest words in the world, “MOM, I’m ready to go!”

Fibromyalgia and Helpful Living

You’ve discovered that you have FMS, FIBROMYALGIA SYNDROME, a clinical disorder characterized by widespread pain. While you aren’t sure what you are going to do about it, you know that you are not ready to throw in the towel at thirty years old, so you begin to look for ways to help you cope with FMS and maintain a high quality of life. Good for You!

First, you need to realize that because depression and anxiety are commonly associated with FMS, doesn’t mean it must “consume” you. From the time that you receive a diagnosis, you must take appropriate measures to insure that you are still participating in your life and don’t become a spectator. Go ahead and start planning what medications will help you with all of the common problems that people with FMS experience. For instance, you should let your Doctor know if you are having difficulty with sleep, what your pains are and where, any depression issues, anxiety, and anything else you think of as you begin to manage your FMS. Learn to relay what you are feeling to your Doctor.

Just as medications need to be discussed with your Doctor, so does exercise. Since exercise may be particularly painful for you, try to find an exercise that you enjoy and know that you will make an effort to stick with on those days that you have FMS flare-ups. Many people with FMS have noticed success with stretching and low-intensity exercise programs. Swimming and water exercise programs will most likely prove very beneficial if you have access to a pool. In fact, this may be the only exercise that you can physically do until you begin to manage your FMS more effectively with medications to help muscles relax. Walking is another form of exercise that you may find helpful. Start slow and make sure you have comfortable walking shoes.

You will find many people will encourage you to join FMS support groups. This is, of course, a personal choice. If you choose to go to a support group, make sure it is a POSITIVE SUPPORT SYSTEM for you. Too often, support groups get together and before you know it, the support group has become a full blown pity party, which is the last thing you need. There are enough positive-focused groups out there to choose the right support group at the right time, and you may opt to handle your diagnosis completely with the help of your own support system consisting of family and friends.

Finally, as you start down the path to discovery, find and read everything you can on Fibromyalgia. It is important that you become familiar with the medications recommended for managing the pain, helping with sleep disturbances, depression and many other problems that FMS brings to your life. It’s important to remember that while there is no cure for Fibromyalgia Syndrome, it is not a death sentence and your life doesn’t have to be over, you just need to learn to live it a little differently.

Healthy Choices When Dining Out

The Holiday Season is the time of year to enjoy spending time with friends and family, Christmas shopping, watching football games by a warm fire, and dining out in fabulous restaurants. If you are trying to watch your weight, it can be difficult making the right healthy choices while eating out in your favorite restaurants!

Chinese Restaurants offer a wide variety of broth-based soups, stir-fried specialties ( with seafood, tofu, vegetables and lean meat ), steamed fish and vegetable dishes, steamed rice, hot mustard sauce, chow mein, and other menu items that you are free to enjoy for low-fat, low-calorie, choices.

There are quite a number of foods that you should avoid as well. Fried egg rolls, fried wontons, dishes made with duck, egg foo yung, and fried chicken should not be ordered if you’re trying to eat healthy. Fried rice should be replaced by steamed rice. The all-you-can-eat buffet should be avoided at all costs.

If you are fortunate enough to have the option of dining out in a restaurant with Indian Cuisine, you have a number of delicious items to choose from for healthy, low-fat options. Chicken, fish, veggies, steamed rice; legumes are included in healthful dishes throughout the menu. Bean soups are delicious and healthy. You can opt for Chapati, Chicken or Shrimp Vindaloo, or Lamb kabobs. The main dishes to exclude when dining out in the Indian Restaurants are the fried breads, dishes served with large amounts of nuts and dishes made with coconut milk. Overall, Indian cuisine is a wonderful dining option when you are watching what you eat.

Some of the most fattening dishes you could possibly dream of are found in Italian Restaurants. Fried Mozzarella sticks, Lasagna, thick creamy Alfredo pasta dishes and many others cloud your judgment when skimming over the menu. However, you will also find many healthy dishes to make your mouth water as well. Thin crust pizza with vegetable toppings, pasta with tomato-based sauces, chicken cacciatore, chicken Marsala, and biscotti are a few items that will keep you at the Italian table without having to give up your commitment to cut calories and watch fat intake. Salads and soup choices are also something to consider. Avoid most deserts in the Italian Restaurants, most are just like the cheese dishes you find here, very rich.

Mexican Cuisine is not totally out for you just because you are choosing to slim your waistline and watch what you eat. Black bean soup, grilled chicken or shrimp dishes, chicken soft tacos, chicken or shrimp fajitas, salsa, and chicken quesadillas are all good healthy choices. You are most likely aware of the foods to avoid here: nachos, refried beans, enchiladas, and fried choices such as chimichangas.

The Holiday Season offers you many opportunities to dine out with family and friends. It’s important to remember that while you are watching you’re weight, you don’t have to exclude yourself from all of the holiday cheer; you just want to be careful not to cheer as loudly as everyone else!

Overweight People Are Not Lazy

Believe it or not, when you were born, your parents did not get to choose your size. Your parents didn’t get to choose your sex, hair color or any other physical characteristic that makes you ….you. They didn’t choose your weight either, or your bone structure. They just couldn’t take over that job; it was hard enough bringing you into the world.

Being overweight seems to be a pre-determined fate for so many Americans. An estimated 64% of Americans are considered overweight. That equates to over 125 million people that are overweight. Or you can call a spade a spade, which equates to over 125 million FAT Americans, which also means that there are a lot of very unattractive Americans.

Supposedly being overweight has been the result of you being lazy, unhealthy, unhappy, selfish, greedy, and unattractive. NO, it hasn’t been the result of any of those reasons! Overweight Americans are often some of the most tenacious career-conscious individuals. They are overworked and often fall into weight problems because they are working long hours, without enough rest and exercise! Approximately ½ of the other 36% of thinner adults choose to condemn those Americans who aren’t as fortunate to have a fast metabolism and the luxury of time to exercise. These very adults have the time, because they also find the time to ridicule the other 64% of the population that need to lose a few pounds.

This all may sound a bit harsh, but suck it up! Thin is in and Fat is Out is a slogan that needs to go right back out the door with the aerobics instructor that brought it in. Sure, if you have a weight problem, you know you have a weight problem. It is not something you don’t have the intelligence to see. See Barbie, while you were on the beach with Ken, the fat chics were getting an education!
Being overweight is still considered one of the biggest sins someone can do to their own bodies , but what about the people out there with true medical problems that prevent them from being thin.? They still fall into the thin person’s stereotype of a FAT LAZY person?

The sad truth is that people who are exceptionally overweight allow others to ridicule them about their weight. The misconceptions that people who are overweight won’t work, are overall lazy people, unhappy, unattractive is a load of bull.

Some of the most beautiful women in the world are either overweight now or have been at some time in their life. LOOK AT OPRAH! She is gorgeous, but she wasn’t always the size she is now, but she was still a pretty happy woman, not to mention a huge success. If you look in the “heftier women magazines” you will find more beautiful women than what you find on the runways of New York, it’s a fact.

The fact is that “grown-ups” still act like children to get ahead in life. It really is the “take the camera off of me and point it over there at someone else” approach. Think of your girlfriends. You likely have one in the bunch that is as cute and prissy as can be, but whenever she isn’t getting the attention from the opposite sex, she will inevitably draw attention to your weight. Don’t pay it a second thought and here’s why. Even though you could get into a dirt throwing contest and bring out all of her faults, (for example that she really wears a lot of make-up because she needs it!) there’s no point because it really doesn’t matter. So you might be overweight, big deal, you are a beautiful person inside and out. Can anyone thin top that?

Sugar Lovers Beware

It would be fair to assume that almost everyone on the planet loves sugar and sweet foods. Processed sugar is in many products and is a key ingredient for baking. It seems that everyone has a sweet tooth for some sugar food in one way or another. Most people know to limit their intake of processed sugar, however, what most people don't know is that sugar is one of the worst ingredients to put into your body. The chemical reaction of sugar in the body acts as a poison. Studies show that sugar has drug like effects in the body.

Processed sugar has many harmful effects throughout the body and can cause major imbalances in the organ systems. You could say that sugar tends to throw off the homeostatic balance of the whole body by increasing the production of adrenaline by many times. In essence, sugar stimulates the nervous system by inducing a flight or fight response.

This is obviously not a healthy process. This intense reaction of the body increases the production of cortisone, which suppresses immune function and can lead to other health disorders.

The daily intake of sugar leads to many other imbalances and malfunctioning of the bodily processes. High sugar consumption leads to an overly acidic body and in turn will cause the body to strip nutrients from its reserves to counterbalance this effect. This can eventually cause the body to take calcium from the bones and teeth since calcium is the primary mineral used to neutralize high acid in the cells. Osteoporosis and arthritic conditions can result from this continued process.

Sugar and its Link to Weight Gain

Excess sugar consumption will eventually effect every organ in the body. Primarily, sugar is stored in the liver as glucose. Since the liver's capacity to store sugar in this form is limited, the liver will start to expand almost like a balloon with continued daily sugar intake. When the livers' capacity has been filled, the excess glycogen (glucose) is returned to the blood in the form of fatty acids (fat). The fatty acid compounds are then taken to various parts of the body and are stored as fat deposits in the buttocks, belly, breasts and hips since these are the most inactive body parts.

The consumption of excess processed (refined) carbohydrates has the same effect on the body. Eating foods with refined white flours and other enriched products can cause the same physiological effects. Consuming excess pasta, rice, chips, pretzels, and other high processed carbohydrates can lead to fat deposits on the body.

Many people do not understand how eating excess pasta or rice can cause weight gain since these foods has very minute quantities of fat and calories in them. The secret is.it is not that important how much fat or calories a food has. The real key is what biological effect does a food have in the body.

When the inactive body parts have become filled with fat then eventually the excess fatty acid deposits will become stored around major organ systems such as the heart and kidneys. This leads to the degeneration of these organs and in turn will cause poor health. This can result in poor immune response, poor circulation, high blood pressure, and can even impact brain functioning.

A False Energy High

Too much sugar intake gives one a false sense of energy. When you eat a sweet food, your energy will go up, however, it only feels that your energy is going up. In fact, this false energy is really your body being stimulated via the flight or fight response that I spoke of earlier. After this reaction has worn off, your energy levels will come crashing down as most people experience every day after they have eaten a high sugar food.

Most children that have ADD can completely heal themselves just by eliminating processed sugars in their diets. Children eat way too many processed sugars. The behaviors and bodily responses that these children feel are the flight or fight responses of their nervous systems. All forms of processed sugars such as nutra sweet, cane juice, corn syrup, brown sugar, splenda, powdered sugar and others have the same effect on the body. The chemical structures of these compounds are very harmful to the body and should not be consumed on a frequent basis.

Fruit sugars are very healthy for you. The monosaccharides (simple sugars) in these natural foods are in a structure that are beneficial to your cells. Fruit sugar has a much different effect on your body than does processed sugar. Fruit sugars nourish and energize the body naturally. This is true energy as compared to the false energy one gets from processed sugars. Your cells require the simple sugars in fruits consistently since they serve to fuel the body with the best substances. Make sure you consistently eat many fruits a day. I would recommend eating 4 to 5 pieces of different fruits a day for better health.

The True Bitterness of nutra sweet & sucralose (splenda tm)

What you are about to discover is information that has been known for quite some time by various health organizations. Please take this information seriously because there are agendas in place to hide this truth and to use it against you.

Aspartame (nutra sweet) is actually worse to consume than sugar. This technical name includes the following brands of sweeteners- (equal, nutra sweet, spoonful and equal measure).

Be advised that these compounds are very powerful and can cause severe biological effects in your body. To say that they are toxic is an understatement. The manufacturer of these compounds knows of the dangers in consuming regular amounts of aspartame substances. As I have already said there is an agenda for putting these compounds into various products.

If you want to know the true agenda then research it for yourself. I am not one who attempts to prove anything to anyone. I challenge you to do your own research and see if you can prove what I am saying wrong. In trying to prove me wrong, you will prove me right.

The Breakdown of Aspartame

Aspartame is a volatile substance, meaning that it breaks down very readily under normal storing conditions. Primarily, all aspartame compounds break down into methanol (alcohol), which is a known neurotoxin. The methanol in time then will break down into formaldehyde that is a highly reactive chemical that is damaging to the cells and genetics of the body.

This process can cause a number of neurodegenerative diseases such as alzheimers, lupus, multiple sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson's disease. The methyl alcohol that forms from aspartame is thousands of times more potent than the alcohol found in a normal alcoholic beverage.

Reactions to aspartame products include the following: headaches, nausea, depression, fatigue, heart palpitations, slurred speech, breathing difficulties, memory loss, seizures and even death. Consuming high amounts of aspartame can also increase your cravings for carbohydrates. I explained earlier that consuming high amounts of empty carbohydrates (refined flours, pasta, rice, chips) will lead to weight gain.

Primarily, the effects of aspartame chemicals in the body seem to alter key hormones thus creating imbalances in neurotransmitters and blocking other hormone precursors.

So, why haven't you heard about these dangers before now? Let's see.the diet industry is a trillion dollar market to many organizations. Obviously, they don't want this secret information to get out to public ears if you know what I mean.

Aspartame & Children

Children love to consume sweets on a daily basis. Many of the food products that these children are consuming have aspartame sweeteners in them. I would advise all parents to get their kids off of aspartame food items. These foods are not healthy for them. There are plenty of healthy alternatives for any of the items that they enjoy.

Email me and I will give you loads of information. Many kids are diagnosed with ADD and other mood disorders. Many of these conditions are being classified as hyper, behavioral problems and others when in fact these children are being affected by the foods they eat. Look at a normal child's food intake for an average day and you will find that they eat way too much sugar and items with aspartame compounds in them.

This daily consumption of these sweeteners has a harmful effect on their nervous system and therefore becomes expressed as mood disorders and behavioral problems. Take these kids off sugar and these sweeteners and watch them improve.

Pregnant Mothers & Aspartame

If you or anyone you know is pregnant then I would say just stay away from these dangerous sweeteners forever. Make sure you read labels and make it a conscious intent to have the whole family keep clean of these products. It will help your whole family out I assure you.

If you are pregnant and consume aspartame foods you will only be hurting the development of the child. Doing so can cause neurological imbalances and other cellular damage. You are also hurting yourself. It is not worth the price just to have your diet soda. Please educate yourself more on this topic for it can save your health and the baby's health.

Products to Stay Away From

If you drink diet soda then are you most likely consuming aspartame. Most diet sodas and many other beverages are sweetened with one of the aspartame sugar substitutes. STAY AWAY FROM ALL PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN THE VARIOUS FORMS OF ASPARTAME! These include aspartame, nutra sweet, splenda, spoonful, equal. Read your labels and throw away all items that have these compounds in them. Take responsibility for your diet. If you choose to continue to consume aspartame after reading this chapter well then you are the one to pay the consequences.

What Will I Use To Sweeten My Drinks & My Food

Relax! I know you enjoy sugar and do not want to give up great tasting foods and beverages. You don't have to. There are some great natural sugar alternatives that I feel taste better than sugar and the other toxic substances mentioned earlier.

To sweeten your drinks you can use Stevia. Stevia is a natural herb that is actually hundreds of times sweeter than regular sugar. It has no fat, carbohydrates or calories and is perfectly suitable for people with diabetes, low carb diets and people with candida and other parasitic conditions. Stevia does not cause spikes in blood sugar and has a nourishing effect on the body. It has been used for centuries among various cultures.

You can get stevia at any health food store in the dietary supplement section. There are 2 products: 1 is a liquid concentrate- I recommend this for sweetening beverages like teas and shakes. The other is a ground up version and is in powder form. I recommend this for foods like cereal or oatmeal.

Agave syrup is an awesome food product. You will love this sweetener guaranteed. It is a compound similar to honey only that it comes from a cactus plant in the desert. I believe that it tastes better than honey and can used on pancakes, cookies and to sweeten baked goods. Try it and see! You can find this at most health food stores. If they don't have it then ask them to carry it.

Rice syrup is also a good sugar alternative. It can be used in various ways and has a pleasant taste.

Date Paste is very sweet and can be added to baked goods and pancakes, waffles and cookies.

Fruit Juice Concentrates can be used to sweeten baked foods as well.

Barley Malt Syrup is another great alternative.

Honey - old time favorite for many, can be used also in various ways from sweetening drinks to sweetening baked goods. Use only organic varieties.

I would say to just buy some of these sweeteners and see which ones you like. They are all healthy to consume on a daily basis and you will feel the difference. You will not miss regular sugar believe me. Your body will thank you I assure by eating natural sugars. If you want some recipes on how to use these sweeteners then let me know via email.

The Truth About Sweet-N-Low

There have many reports that state Sweet-N-Low can be carcinogenic when used frequently. I remember when I was a child I heard that this can be a harmful compound to the body. The truth of the matter is that Sweet-N-Low is not harmful to your body. The chemical structure of this substance does not have any damaging effects to your cells as do the sugar substitutes mentioned earlier.

I stated previously that the important thing of any compound is the chemical structure and its biological effects once in the body. Sweet-N-Low has no negative effects once in the body. It is actually a good substitute for sugar.

So why have there been reports that state Sweet-N-Low can be carcinogenic? Do you remember where you heard this? I bet you picked it up via your TV or some other media outlet. Who divulged this information? I hope by now you are beginning to see that there are some organizations that don't want you knowing information that can benefit your health.

The misinformation about Sweet-N-Low was released to get you to not want to ingest it so that you would then resort to other sugar substitutes.do you understand? Again, there are agendas in place to get you to believe certain things about health and various food products.

They. (this includes all organizations colluding to carry out their corrupt agendas) program society via the media outlets (TV, magazines, newspapers, radio, etc). Then when people hear the truth such as Sweet-N-Low is actually good they don't believe it because they have been programmed to believe the opposite. My advice to you is stop watching the news and reading newspapers. There is always misinformation in these outlets, not just health information by the way. Name a subject and you have been programmed about it. Don't believe me? great. I challenge you to research what I am saying.

So there you have it. You now know the truth about sugar and sugar substitutes. Please use this information immediately.

You Must Learn To See Through The Veils of Illusion To Get at the Truth !

Asthma

First of all, I want to make it clear that this information is not to diagnose nor to prescribe and it should not take the place of the advice of your doctor. This is intended to complement conventional medicine, not to replace it. Consult with your doctor before starting any kind of nutritional or physical program.

Asthma is considered a spasm or inflammation of the bronchial tubes that lead to the lungs. This can be due to irritation caused by allergies to food or airborne pollution, or a sensitivity that is out of what we call the “norm.” This sensitivity could be to all the above or it can be emotional. Some researchers think it could be an inherited or genetic weakness. I have not seen enough research for this to be substantiated, so I leave that up to the experts. I do know, however, it can happen at any age yet it is more common during childhood and some kids just outgrow it. About 6 to 7% of the population has asthma, and it seems to be more common among males.

There is a lot of controversy about asthma. The main problem is not taking a breath in but in releasing the breath out. If we look at this from a psychological standpoint it has to do with letting go of certain attitudes, or holding on to certain emotions. We know that certain stress increases an asthmatic’s condition or can even bring about an attack. What this is telling many of us is that asthma can be very much tied in with our minds and emotions. I know this from some of the latest research I have read and from having an asthmatic son and stepson. I was able to put many medical and natural remedies to work with my own family.

There is much to learn about asthma and whether or not nutritional approaches can really help this condition. In my experience, asthma can be as different as the patient that has it, and every case needs to be looked at separately. I feel very strongly about this approach with all symptoms or diseases. We need to treat the whole person and not lump everyone into the same category of asthmatics, for example.

We do know that many asthmatics seem to have airborne allergies and/or sensitivity to foods. Often times the traditional allergy tests like skin or blood tests can confirm certain serious allergies. However, it’s some of the not so commonly recognized food allergies that may be the problem. By just eliminating commonly known allergens such as dairy products, wheat, peanuts, excessive sugar, and according to other nutritional doctors, certain shellfish, shrimp and sulfates, which seem to irritate the mucous lining, I know most will improve.

Eliminating dairy products would be beneficial if the person gets excessive mucus when ingesting them. Wheat is a common allergen for most people because the gluten is very hard to digest. There are very good alternative sources for calcium such as many green leafy vegetables, cabbage, and cauliflower, as well as sunflower seeds and almonds. You can purchase soy milk, almond milk or rice milk; these alternative products are less mucus forming. Once again, every individual is different. Care must be used if certain foods are eliminated and then introduced again because there may be a harsher reaction to them the second time around.

Here in Hawaii, we have another problem -- molds, mildew and airborne allergens such as pollen and certain dusts. Some asthmatics are allergic to ordinary house dust. If your child has sensitivities to these pollutants there are air purifiers, ionizing machines, etc. that can be of benefit in the home. When I had my son tested for allergies there were even couch dust allergies that affected him. You may want to get dehumidifiers for their bedroom. All of these things can help.

If we look at the work by Dr. Robert Young about having the body be more alkaline, we can see that many of the problems occur with food choices. The body can do quite well on a diet low in protein and high in greens, vegetables, and a little carbohydrate. I find the key is to get some expert advice if you are not a nutritionist, and none of this information is meant to replace seeing your doctor for asthma. Hopefully, it will complement and educate you to alternative approaches. Care should be taken in any change of diet and with the use of medicines or even herbs.

Many allergies to dairy products, bread or yeast, and even to eggs or corn are hard to test for in the laboratory. Many times the reaction is very subtle and not so obvious. Changing one’s diet will take time before seeing any results. You will not see dramatic results on a long term condition in a few short months. Once again, you should think of consulting a nutritional doctor for the best way to approach this condition.

Nutritional Approach

Foods to Eliminate or Cut Down On

Look for specific asthma triggers that produce, for example, excess mucus. If after eating a pizza, the kid gets a runny nose and starts to cough for the next two days, this may tell you something. This is an obvious one but many times we don’t pay close attention and there are many more subtle triggers. Foods that create a lot of gas can cause pressure on the diaphragm and sometimes trigger an asthma attack as well, so watch for that.

Eliminate or greatly reduce potential allergens such as the dairy products and replace with almond milk or soy products. Buy unyeasted breads, eliminate wheat, barley and rye gluten products, and cut out peanuts. Reduce or eliminate sodas and sweets, even reduce fruit that is too concentrated with natural sugars such as dried fruit. Juices should always be watered down for kids, anyway. Reduce salt intake and cut out artificial sweeteners, and check your labels for additives and other unnatural colors, etc. More natural foods are better for everyone, not just asthmatics. A low salt diet may reduce bronchial sensitivity and improve asthma status as well. Remember, work with the child on all levels because emotional distress is also an important asthma trigger that is often overlooked.

For Adults

The same recommendations apply as far as eliminating the foods above. Alcohol varies in its effect on individual asthmatics; it can help some (I think it calms them) or make it worse. Often it conflicts with digestion. Wine may make the condition worse because of the many sulfates used in making it.

Caffeine can have a modest, acute anti-asthma relief, probably because of its chemical similarity to the asthma medicine, Theophylline. However, I wouldn’t recommend using coffee. It should be reduced because of its high acidity. Teas could be used. I’m not fanatical about anything, but coffee on an empty stomach does not help the body, and if you are asthmatic you already have an overly sensitive body.

Foods

As I said earlier, eat lots of greens; they are great for the body. The key is to try and eliminate acid foods like meats, bread, sweets, and dairy products. Broccoli is one of the best vegetables because it is 65% protein. Eat more avocados; they are not fattening and they have the good fats (see nutrition article). Now there are green drinks on the market with many grasses that are very high in chlorophyll. Work with a specialist to get your body back to an alkaline balance. It is the strongest protection for the immune system. Eat more onions and garlic with your food. Reduce meat protein and increase protein such as tofu or fish, tuna and salmon being among the best because they are high in Omega 3 as well as fish oil, which has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect and a benefit found in treating rheumatoid arthritis. It may be helpful for asthma as well. These stimulate and heal the immune system. Use sea kelp for minerals and seasoning.

Bee pollen has proved to be helpful if eaten from local sources. If the allergies are airborne, bee pollen can strengthen the immune system and the body will start to resist the pollens it’s allergic to. Be sure to start with a few granules at a time and work up to two or three teaspoons daily. It’s great in smoothies. Discontinue if rashes or wheezing occur using those small amounts.

Herbs

(Caution! All herbs are like medicine and should not be taken for long term use unless you are consulting with your doctor.)

The best herbs or natural foods are garlic and onions but gingko biloba known best for its benefit on the mind or its "anti-senility" effects may help. During an attack, I used a lobelia, goldenseal and bee propolis tincture that worked great for the kids, not for long term use, though. Other herbs that are beneficial are mullein oil in tea or juice, slippery elm tea or tablets, horsetail, juniper berries, licorice root and Pau d’arco tea.

Ma huang, a Chinese herb (ephedra sinica), can be used as a tea twice daily but it’s not recommended for extended use. This plant is a source of the asthma medicine, ephedrine, a close cousin of Theophylline, a widely used asthma medicine. Most doctors recommend the use of the prescription medicines Theophylline or ephedrine since the potency of the tea is not consistent and can have serious side effects like nervousness and irregular heart beat.

Tylophora asthmatica in tea twice daily can be taken but it is not recommended for long term use, either. This Indian herb has been used to treat asthma in the Ayurvedic tradition for thousands of years.

Quercitin, 500 mg 3 times daily, is an important bioflavonoid, and is biochemically similar to the anti-asthma drug Intalcromolyn. In some experiments quercitin has been shown to prevent mast cells from releasing histamines, a chemical that aggravates allergic reactions.

Vitamins (Recommended doses are for adults or large teenagers)

Very helpful, for most of us as well are most anti-oxidant vitamins. Vitamin A, 10,000 –20,000 IU daily; 10,000 -20,000 IU’s daily of natural beta carotene. Vitamin C, 1500-3000 mg daily. Always take Vitamin C with bioflavinoids, one of the lungs most important anti-oxidant defenses. High doses can be given to asthmatics before an acute exposure to irritants or allergens. Vitamin B complex, 500-1000 mg daily with extra Vitamin B-6, 50-200 mg daily; Niacin (vitamin B-3) or niacinamide; Bromelain (Wobenzime from Maryln Nutriceudicals), 1000 –3000 mg daily. Bromelain is a pineapple enzyme. I’m a great believer in this nutrient for many things. It is a natural anti-inflammatory nutrient, reducing inflammation not only in the joints but it also works on the lungs. Also, pycnogenol or grape seed extract is both anti-inflammatory and an anti-oxidant. Magnesium, 300-600 mg (magnesium helps an acute asthma attack when given intravenously.) Most nutrition oriented physicians believe oral magnesium can help chronic asthma as well. Vitamin D, 500 IU daily. N-Acetyl Cysteine, 500-1000 mg. This nutrient is converted in the body to glutathione. It has definite mucous thinning and anti-oxidant effects.

Vitamin B-12, orally 1,000 mcg twice a day or for some acute conditions, an injection of Vitamin B-12, 1000 mcg weekly may be helpful (see your physician)

Amino acids l-cysteine, 500 mg twice a day on an empty stomach taken with the B vitamins and Vitamin C. Along with that, also take l-methionine, 500 mg twice a day.

Recommendation

Consult an allergist and get a food test (cytotoxic) and a skin test (intracutaneous titration). Some doctors even do the sublingual provocation and pulse tests to determine your food allergies or other airborne allergies. Always keep in mind that the interpretation of these tests is highly subjective often depending on the doctor that you are working with. Find one that also works with nutrition.

Often times it’s more accurate to eliminate suspected foods and to keep a food diary to identify trigger foods. Watch your child’s food or your own carefully. Consider eliminating the other potentially common allergen foods but only in a well-supervised approach, and be prepared to treat an acute asthma reaction when reintroducing suspected foods.

A good example of an elimination diet could be eating many of the greens in salads, brown rice, sweet potatoes, squash, or for us in Hawaii, poi, which is made from taro, a great food and hypo-allergenic to most people. Then, of course, many steamed vegetables can be eaten such as beets and their greens, asparagus, chard, squash, carrots, artichokes, string beans and spinach. Very small amounts of cooked fruits such as peaches, apricots, papaya, plums and prunes. No citrus fruits. Cooking fruits alters the protein in them making them less likely to be allergens. Then after a cleansing diet, re-introduce some of these foods, one at a time on an empty stomach, to see the results.

Take an insurance formula multi-vitamin/mineral. The best ones are liquid and they should be specific for age and weight. Listed above are doses meant for an adult or a large teenager.

Consider also a six-week trial of 1000 mcg vitamin B-12 injections for the children.

There is a good source for many of these nutrients called “Urban Air Defense” from Source Naturals, a great company.

I hope this information has been helpful to you but it is not meant to replace your doctor. Always be sure to check with your physician before undergoing any severe change in your diet or in your children’s diet.

Ask the Expert: Allergy Q & A with Dr. Harold Kim

Author: News Canada
(NC)- What is an allergy?

An allergy is a super-sensitivity to a substance that is not harmful to most other people. These substances are called allergens. The common allergens include pollen, mould, dust mites, cockroaches and pet dander. Some people also have food allergies. Some people have symptoms with strong chemical fumes, odours (including perfumes, fragrances in household cleaners and detergents), smoke and air pollution. These compounds are chemical irritants and not true allergens. The common symptoms of allergy include hay fever, asthma, eczema or food reactions.

How do I know if I have allergies?

Hay fever is the most common allergy problem in Canada. The typical symptoms of hay fever are sneezing, a stuffy or runny nose, watery eyes, a dry cough and itching. Asthma is a lung condition which can lead to shortness of breath, wheezing or coughing. Eczema is a skin condition which often involves a dry itchy rash. True food allergy reactions can include hives, itchiness, shortness of breath, throat tightness, lightheadedness or stomach pain after eating the food allergen. Allergies can be a serious medical condition and you should consult your doctor if you suspect you have them. A doctor may recommend allergy scratch tests (a type of skin testing in which suspected allergens are applied to the skin, scratched and observed for a reaction in 15 minutes). Skin tests should always be done under the supervision of a qualified physician with an expertise in allergy.

How are allergies treated?

The first step in an effective allergy treatment plan is to make some simple lifestyle changes that will limit your exposure to allergens. I would suggest having allergy scratch tests done before any major lifestyle changes are made. After the allergy scratch tests you will know the likely causes of the allergy symptoms. One can avoid pollen by keeping windows closed and air conditioning on during the high-pollen seasons. Most of the mould that causes allergies is from the outdoors. Therefore, keeping the windows closed is helpful. If you notice mould in the house it should be cleaned with diluted bleach. The best ways of avoiding dust mites are to purchase proper dust mite proof pillows and mattress covers, remove carpet from the bedroom, wash the bedding in hot water and to keep the humidity around 40 percent. Vacuuming and duct cleaning are actually not very effective at removing dust mites. The only way to remove pet allergens completely from the home is to keep the pet outdoors or to give the pet away. By keeping pets out of the bedroom, washing pets weekly and removing carpets from the bedroom, you can decrease your total pet allergen exposure. If you have a true food allergy, that food should be completely avoided.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist about which medications would help you manage your allergy symptoms. Antihistamines are the most common medications used to treat hay fever. Antihistamines block the action of histamine released by the immune system and are effective at reducing sneezing, runny nose and itchy, watery eyes. They are particularly effective at relieving the symptoms of seasonal hay fever and should be taken as soon as an allergy attack develops. You may also need a decongestant to reduce nasal congestion. Some antihistamines can cause side effects such as drowsiness and they should be avoided if you have to drive, work or perform tasks that require you to be alert. There are several websites offering good information on allergies, for example, visit www.claritin.ca.

An Asthma Treatment with a Sweet Healing!

Carol M., was a fun loving child...except for one thing.

She had to drag around a ton of allergies.

Her nose was constantly running and she couldn't get within ten feet of a cat. As if this wasn't misery enough, she had to put up with constant teasing from playmates. They took to calling her, Miss Runny Nose.

Carol longed to be an adult because she had been told she might outgrow her allergies. But this didn't happen.

Instead, her allergies turned into asthma. She ended up taking drugs several times a day and constantly reaching for an inhaler.

Nights were often the worst. In order to breathe she had to sleep sitting up.

The drugs added to her misery, making her feel as if she'd been on a coffee binge. She had difficulty concentrating. And every nerve in her body seemed to be exposed.

Despite everything, Carol did manage to launch a successful professional singing career. But demon asthma kept advancing. Eventually, she had to abandon even this joyous activity. Breathing became too difficult.

Desperation drove her to look for drug alternatives. That's when she discovered simple sugars.

The science made sense to her. Here was food. Not some new miracle drug...not some magic extract from an exotic plant. But food backed by a science taught in medical schools since 2002.

Still she had doubts. It seemed almost too good to be true. But desperate for relief, she decided to try the science. It couldn't hurt. After all, it was simply food. Non-toxic. No interaction with drugs. Safe as a blueberry muffin.

At first there was no change. But she had been told to expect that. It was like starting an exercise program. Results don't happen immediately.

Finally, after three months, she noticed she was breathing easier. She went back to sleeping in her bed. And with her doctor's approval, she began weaning herself off prescription drugs.

That was several years ago and Carol feels better today than she can ever remember. She still includes the simple sugars in her diet. She knows that, just like exercise, those sugars are essential to health. And they have become part of her daily eating habit.

What are these simple sugars?

Just what the name implies. They are sugar. But not the table grade stuff that diabetics have to avoid.

These sugars (there are eight of them) are an essential part of your cellular communication system.

And in case you don't think this is terribly important consider that cells must communicate their needs to stay healthy. And they are expected to identify bad cells and communicate this to your immune system so they can be eliminated.

Reduce your intake of simple sugars and it may scramble your cellular communication system. And that opens the door to disease.

Bottom line is this.

We need these simple sugars everyday. And our modern diet provides precious few of them. Therefore, almost all of us are experiencing health problems...sometimes life debilitating or life threatening.

You should at least become familiar with this science.

Your doctor may not know about it. Even though the science has been written up in almost every medical journal, ‘food' topics often go unnoticed within the medical community.

You may need to check it out on your own. There are many resources available. The important thing is to do it now.

Spending a few minutes checking out a relatively new but proven medical treatment could be a lifesaver for you or a loved one.

Doug Grant and his wife Jan have helped many people learn about the Science of Simple Sugars.

Allergies, Asthma and City Trees

Some urban tree species cause an inordinate amount of asthma and allergy problems, while other tree species cause little or no health problems. A large part of the problem is that the arborists and landscape professionals, who plant these trees, often don’t know the difference.

The type of trees (and shrubs) used in modern city landscapes has changed dramatically in the past three decades. In the past, the majority of street trees used were perfect-flowered, insect-pollinated trees, such as the once so common American elm tree.

Today though, many of the most widely used city trees are wind-pollinated species. Most of these species are unisexually flowered (dioecious and/or monoecious) and further compounding the problem, thousands of popular cultivars sold today are touted to be “seedless,” “low-maintenance,” “pod-free” or “litter-free.”

These fruitless, seedless trees are male plants, all male, and male trees produce prodigious amounts of allergenic pollen. Female trees produce NO pollen what soever.

In dioecious-flowered trees such as most ash, willow and poplars, it is easy to propagate male only trees because they are separate-sexed. Monoecious trees, which in Nature always have both sexes (male and female flowers) on the same tree, also usually produce abundant pollen.

It is possible to have all-male trees from the monoecious species. On many species the sexes will be born on separate branches, such as on a Honey Locust tree. If you take cuttings, or budwood, only from the branches with male flowers, then, you'll get an all-male tree. Lots of monoecious Acer spp. cultivars are male-only plants.

In a somewhat different way, there are also numerous monoecious species where only the top or only the bottom will have either male or female flowers. For example, the bottom half of a mature Italian Cypress for example is all-male. Female wood is found only at the top of the plant. Thus, scion wood taken from the bottom usually produces "seedless" plants.

The terms “dioecious,” and “monoecious,” are botanical terms, not horticultural terms. We could perhaps say that a manipulated, asexually propagated all-male cultivar, taken from a monoecious species, is now “dioecious,” but this is not quite correct. A proper dioecious tree is one that in Nature is separate-sexed. These modern engineered trees are never found in Nature.

Interestingly, the first reference in print I ever found to this single sexing-out with monoecious street trees, was in a USDA booklet, from 1982, called “Genetic Improvement of Urban Street Trees.”

How Bad Is Allergy Now?

In 1959 the official rate of allergy in the U.S. was between 2 to 5% of the public. By 1999 the official rate of allergy had increased to an incredible 38% of Americans. Asthma, which was once considered rare, is now the number one chronic childhood disease in the US.

Where are Allergies and Asthma the Worst?

The most common allergen of all is pollen and since there are so many more plants growing in the country than in the city, it would make sense then that there is more allergy and asthma in the countryside. Right? No, wrong! Allergies and asthma are far worse in the city than they are in the country.

Several things contribute to this:

1.Pavement makes a poor pollen trap. Pollen in the city often lands on pavement where wind can cause it to become airborne again. In naturally vegetated areas where there is much more vegetation, pollen often lands on and becomes stuck in grasses, shrubs and vines or in trees.

2.Cities have more air pollution, which weakens the immune system and lung function.

3.Stress, which is generally higher in cities, can contribute to both asthma and allergy development.

4.Increased carbon dioxide levels within cities causes pollen-forming plants to produce more pollen with each bloom cycle, and also often causes urban plants to bloom more often.

5.Pollen loads are actually far greater in cities because there is a sexual imbalance within the plant community. In the city there is a preponderance of male trees and shrubs, while in the rural areas there is almost always a complete balance of plant sexuality. The excess of male plants in the city results in an excess of pollen.

6.The very lack of female plant materials in the urban environment also is a prime factor in the epidemic of allergy and asthma. Female flowers carry an electrical negative (-) charge (the trees are grounded with their roots) and airborne pollen holds a positive (+) charge. The tree and the pollen are mutually attractive; thus a female plant becomes a very effective pollen trap for pollen of its own species. But with almost no female trees and shrubs in modern landscapes, most of the pollen remains airborne.

How to Improve Health and Air Quality through Tree Selection

Landscaping to reduce allergies, especially pollen allergies, is an idea that is coming into its own. In the past few years several books have been written on the subject and interest is growing rapidly.

With the addition of OPALS™, (Ogren Plant-Allergy Scale) arborists now have a means to design allergy-free plantings. This scale ranks all landscape plant materials on a simple 1 to 10 allergy basis. Trees that produce zero pollen, e.g., female cultivars, usually rank the best – number one. Trees that have abundant, highly allergenic pollen, especially those with very long bloom periods, are usually ranked the worst – in the 9-10 range. There are many trees and shrubs, however, that fall somewhere in between. Using a list of over 100 factors, OPALS™ numerically ranks each species and then further ranks the individual cultivars. There are often dramatic allergy differences even between two species in the same genus.

How Are Plants Allergy-Ranked?

OPALS™ was developed based on the following considerations: “What do plants that are well known to cause allergies have in common?” and “What do plants that are well known NOT to cause allergies have in common?” With these two questions it was possible to build two opposing sets of medical-botanical-allergy criteria. One set is positive and one set is negative. Examples of negative criteria: tiny flowers, excerted stamens, small (less than 25 microns in diameter) sized pollen grains, extended bloom period. Examples of positive criteria: complete flowered, sticky, heavy pollen grains, presence of nectaries, brief bloom period.

There are now over a hundred criteria used to develop OPALS™ rankings. Individual landscapers, city arborists, the USDA and the American Lung Association have already use the scale to make better landscaping decisions.

Based on the plant-allergy scale it is now possible to state, for example, that Acer rubrum – ‘Red Sunset’ maple, is ranked number one and causes no allergies. By comparison, ‘Autumn Spire,’ a male cultivar of red maple does cause allergies and is ranked number nine. Most Pine trees will rank at numbers 4 to 5 and will cause some allergy. Platanus species (sycamore) rank number eight, and cause quite a bit of allergy. A male Canary Island Palm, Phoenix canariensis, which is considered one of the worst at a ranking of 10, will produce an abundance of pollen that will cause severe allergic reactions to many living nearby.

Pollen dispersal rates have been measured since 1972 (Gilbert Raynor, NY meteorologist) and although many pollen grains travel far in the air, research shows that most often 99% of a tree's pollen falls out and sticks within fifty feet of the tree. This means that the closer one is to the pollinating tree the greater the exposure. Thus, the job for arborists is to plant trees that will not expose everyone near them to allergenic pollen.

So, How Do You Tell the Boys from the Girls?

It isn’t always that obvious by looking at a tree (especially a young tree) as to whether or not it is a pollen-free female or a pollen-producing male. But since so many city trees are now asexually produced cultivars, the sex is predetermined. In the book Allergy-Free Gardening, which is the result of 15 years of research on this subject, several thousand trees were individually sexed and allergy-ranked. In some cities, pollen control ordinances are already on the books, although most of these could be improved an updated. Albuquerque, New Mexico is particular interesting, since it has attempted to curb allergies by prohibiting the sale and planting of any male cultivars.

As the public grows more knowledgeable about allergy-free landscapes, municipal arborists and landscape specialists will want to be ahead of the curve. They will want to show their clients that they are well-informed on the subject. In the future, instead of planting high allergy-trees, they will need to plan and plant ‘healthy’ urban landscapes.

Are You at Risk for Getting Alzheimer's Disease?

Introduction

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive condition that damagesareas of the brain involved in intelligence, memory, behavior, judgment, and language. It is the most common form of mental decline in older adults. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, but the course of the disease varies from person to person. Some people may still be able to function relatively well until late stages of Alzheimers disease. Others may lose the ability to do daily activities in earlier stages. Over time, Alzheimer's disease causes severe mental and functional problems and eventually results in death.

Causes

Scientists do not yet fully understand the causes of Alzheimer's disease. There probably is not one single cause, but several factors that affect each person differently.

Recent studies indicate that amyloid beta protein may cause Alzheimer's disease. In healthy people, this protein can cross the blood-brain barrier (the wall of blood vessels that feed the brain and regulate the entry and exit of brain chemicals) and leave the brain. In people with Alzheimers disease, amyloid beta protein can't pass through that barrier. As more amyloid beta protein accumulates in a person's brain, they become more and more mentally disabled.

Research has recently revealed that consumption of sugar could be one of the biggest threats to our overall health - especially when it comes to age related diseases such as Alzheimer's. One of the major problems stemming from sugar over-consumption is a chemical process called glycation. Glycation refers to the combination of a sugar and a protein molecule and occurs in your body when glucose in your blood combines with the amino acids tryptophan, lysine or arginine. This reaction releases byproducts called Advanced Glycation Endproducts (appropriately given the acronym AGE).

The formation of AGEs is accelerated when you have lower levels of antioxidants in your system and when your kidneys are weak or malfunctioning. The formation is also accelerated when blood sugar levels are high. Researchers now believe that glycation and the formation of AGEs lie at the heart of the alteration of proteins in the brain that cause Alzheimer's disease.

Risk Factors

Age is the most important known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. The number of people with the disease doubles every 5 years beyond age 65.

Blood sugar problems that cause excess glucose in the blood, such as diabetes, has now been added to the list of risk factors for Alzheimer's, given the role of glycation.

Family history is another risk factor, depending on the type of Alzheimer's. Familial Alzheimer's Disease, a rare form of Alzheimer's that usually occurs between the ages of 30 and 60, is inherited - so family history is a big risk factor. The more common form of Alzheimers disease is known as late-onset Alzheimer's. It occurs later in life, and no obvious inheritance pattern is seen.

Relationship to Aluminum

Since 1965, researchers have suspected that Alzheimers disease is related to accumulations of aluminum in the brain. A relationship between aluminum in drinking water and Alzheimer's has now been established. Additionally, a study looked at the association of Alzheimer's and lifetime exposure to aluminum in antiperspirants and antacids. Scientists found a direct correlation. The more antiperspirant that was used, the more likely the person would develop Alzheimers disease. The same held true for aluminum antacids. It is hard to deny that environmental exposure to aluminum is at least related to Alzheimer's.

Symptoms and Cures

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disease for which there is no known cure. However, various therapies and treatments can slow the progression of Alzheimer's. Therefore, it is important to know the warning signs for each stage of Alzheimer's (http://www.the-natural-path.com/stage-of-alzheimers.html) and detect the condition
early. If caught early alpha lipoic acid (http://www.the-natural-path.com/alpha-lipoic-acid.html) and other Alzheimer's treatments can be used to slow (and possibly stop) the progression of the disease.

Coffee & Alzheimer's disease?

With the American population aging rapidly, diseases that affect the health of the elderly are becoming increasingly important. The prevalence of these conditions is increasing and is costing both insurers and taxpayers billions of dollars each year. One of the most widely-known such conditions is Alzheimer's disease, which is a condition that affects the neurological health of the afflicted patient. Several studies have been done recently to determine whether there is a valid link between drinking coffee and reduction in the risk of Alzheimer's disease. In mid-2002, a hospital clinic in Portugal investigated to see if there was a link between drinking coffee and the reduction of the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. In particular, the researchers sought to determine if the caffeine in coffee could protect against the degeneration of the brain that is associated with Alzheimer's disease in the period before diagnosis. They studied fifty-four patients with Alzheimer's disease.

All of the patients met the Alzheimer's disease and Related Disorders criteria. The researchers found that the caffeine in coffee was associated with a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, even when other issues were taken into account.

A university clinic located in Berlin, Germany, looked at the relationship between consumption of coffee and the delay in the onset of Alzheimer's disease or reduction in the rate of progression of the disease. While they were unable to definitively state that the caffeine in coffee was beneficial to patients with Alzheimer's disease, they did see the possibility of the link between coffee and overall neurological health.

Finally, a University in Ottawa Canada analyzed the risk factors for Alzheimer's disease as part of the Canadian Study of Health and Aging. They studied more than six thousand patients aged 65 years or older between 1991 and 1996. The researchers found that consumption of coffee was associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease. They concluded that the evidence from this study warranted further research and review.

While these studies have not been able to definitively state that drinking coffee reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease, there is enough evidence to warrant further research. In particular, the studies have shown that caffeine intake as when drinking coffee is at the very least related to neurological function such as the function that is lost with the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Is mangosteen the answer for your disease/illness? It could very well be!

The Mangosteen is tangerine-sized and is deep purple in color on the outside, with a bright white pulp in the inside. Prized because of its excellent flavor, in Asia it is called the "Queen of Fruits," and, in the French Caribbean, the "Food of the
Gods."

Used for centuries throughout the lands in which it grows, recent scientific studies have revealed an incredible scope of potent human health benefits leading many to believe that Mangosteen will be the most important fruit on earth.

I am convinced that Mangosteen will, without a doubt, be the most successful food supplement ever ~ J. Frederic Templeman, M.D.

Dr. Templeman is a practicing primary care physician, board-certified in both the US and Canada, who has never before endorsed a food supplement. But after testing a Mangosteen derived Juice on his patients, Dr. Templeman went on to publish MANGOSTEEN, THE X FACTOR.

His booklet summarized both the observations of the native healers and peoples of Southeast Asia, and the scientific research that now documents the potent effects of this amazing fruit.

As Dr. Templeman states in the beginning of his book, what is impressive about these studies is that all the scientific studies on Mangosteen are independent. The studies have no commercial bias. In addition, while potent effects are noted with profound implications for human health, no safety or toxicity issues have been noted.

The following is a summary of the X Factor by Dr. Templeman

Immune System

Protects against pathogens, sepsis, influenza, pneumonia, tuberculosis, AIDS, and diverticulosis. Anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal. Laboratory demonstrated to interfere with HIV protease, which keeps the virus immature and incapable of infections. Thai study demonstrated effectiveness against staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Polysaccharides in the rind stimulate phagocytic immune cells (PMNs and monocytes). Effective against salmonella, typhus and tuberculosis bacteria.

Asian healers have used Mangosteen for centuries for syphilis, malaria, and amebic dysentery. In South America, it is used for intestinal worm infestations.

Anti-Tumor Properties

Catechins in Mangosteen: Prevent formation of carcinogenic compounds by blocking co-carcinogens. Turn up body's natural detoxification defenses. Suppress cancer promotion or growth.

Gastro-Intestinal System

Dysentery, GI pathogens, diverticulosis, histamine and serotonin blocking capacity. Reduces excess stomach acid. Anti-allergic effect. Anti-stomach ulcer.

Respiratory System

Mangosteen study in September 2002 reported that it is an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic agent. Relevant for asthma. Xanthoses modulate IGE, antibody class involved in allergic reactions. Mangosteen can accomplish what we now use several drugs to do. Ideal product to use daily to protect our respiratory systems integrity

The Central Nervous System

Dr. Nakahatas research with glial cells (central nervous systems cells) suggest that Mangosteen could produce a therapeutic effect in both treatment and prevention of Parkinsons and Alzheimers disease.

Skin

Mangosteen used for centuries to treat eczema, dermatitis, wounds, ringworm, acne, impetigo, and growth disorders of dermis (psoriasis or seborrhea) skin cancer and sun damage.

Folk Medicine Remedies (India, China, Malaysia, Philippines, etc.)

Antimicrobial/anti-inflammatory powers. Treating eczematous and hyperkeratotic skin conditions. In Caribbean, tonic for fatigue and malaise. Controlling fever.

Systemic Effects

Helps with fatigue, low energy. Used on persons with chronic fatigue and illness. From Dr. James Duke, perhaps Americas foremost ethnobotanist. Retired in 1995. He worked for the USDA and University of Maryland. Prolific writer and created a
phytochemical and ethnobotanical database.

Mangosteen is listed with 138 separate benefits. The following are the major benefits:

Anti-fatigue

Air Quality We Breathe At Home Or In The Workplace

How would you rate the quality of air in your workplace? More importantly what factors are you considering when rating it?

Your home or work environment may be causing you additional health risks without you realizing it. On average, Canadians spend about 80-90 percent of their time indoors, thus the quality of indoor air is very important. Ask yourself a few questions:

Does fresh, outside air flow into the room or office you are usually in?

Is the room humid?

Are there any gas-fired appliances?

Is your furniture composed of particle board or wood laminents?

These questions need to be addressed when determining the quality of air in our home or workplace. Here are the reasons why.

Does fresh, outside air flow into the room or office you are usually in? Better insulation can save on heating costs, but it limits the amount of fresh air that enters and leaves your house or office. As a lot of water vapour is produced from normal human activities, fresh air is necessary to get rid of this extra humidity.

Is the room humid?

Humid or damp conditions in your home can encourage the growth of mould and dust mites. Mould can develop from too much humidity, building leaks, refrigerator drip pans, bathroom surfaces and flooding. Mouldy smells from carpet, wood and gypsum board are a sign that they harbour fungi. Stale water in humidifiers and air conditioners can lead to the growth of bacteria and fungi.

Are there any gas-fired appliances?

Typically, oven and pilot light emissions are not vented and can contribute significantly to indoor levels of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde. Of emerging interest as a potential source of indoor air pollution is the wood burning stove. Since combustion is much less complete with wood than with oil and gas furnaces, pollution emissions can be greater. Though by-products should be vented to the outside, leaks and improper operation of these appliances can cause emissions to the indoors. Kerosene heaters are becoming increasingly popular for space heating. Since these systems are often unvented, the potential for high level contamination exists.

Is your furniture composed of particle board or laminated wood?

Formaldehyde is released from laminated wood and particleboard in which formaldehyde-containing resins have been used. Urea formaldehyde foam insulation is a significant source of formaldehyde and possibly other gaseous products. Insulating materials such as fibreglass can release particulate matter to indoor air.

Health Risks

Illnesses caused by poor air quality range from skin irritation to sneezing and asthma. In some cases, toxins from fungi can cause illness. Toxins in dust can produce fever and flu-like symptoms, especially if the environment is damp. Viruses can also be found in indoor air, but they do not usually lead to illness. A virus does not survive long in air, and getting sick usually results from contact with infected people.

Air Purifiers And Air Filters Can Help The Health Of Allergy And Asthma Sufferers

Indoor air pollution in the form of dander, dust and pollen particulate matter can be a real irritant for suffers of asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions. In addition to removal of all direct irritant sources and minimizing the irritant containment materials in your house, you should also consider the indoor ventilation and filtration system of home.

Environmental control is the key to reducing exposure to indoor and outdoor allergens. Keeping a clean house free of dust, dander, smoke, pollen, and other airborne particulate matters will help to reduce the irritation and effect on family members with respiratory difficulties. Air cleaners, filters and hepa filters can play a role in helping to control or reduce the exposure to indoor and outdoor allergens.

Several health authorities have recognized that certain types of air filtration systems can be beneficial in reducing the amount of airborne particulates in a room. The American lung association recommends using a hepa air filter purifier for the bedrooms of asthma suffers. The Mayo clinic recommends an air particle filter for household ventilation systems. Ionic filters and hepa filters have been endorsed or recognized by the Asthma and allergy foundation of America (AAFA) and the British Allergy Foundation seal of approval.

Selecting the wrong type of filtration system could exacerbate the problem by agitating and circulating the existing particulate matter throughout your house, so it is important to do your research thoroughly. Ionic air filters do not create high airflow patterns to clean the air and simply rely on negative ion attraction to collect the airborne particulate matter. They have demonstrates to have decent capture rate of airborne allergens and irritants like pollen, dander, tobacco smoke and dust and can help improve the quality of your indoor air environment. You can read more the ionic air filtration process at http://www.air-purifiers-review.com/ionic-air-cleaner.htm.

Air filtration systems should not be considered as a solution for any respiratory condition, nor as a reason to ignore sound medical advice and guidance about the removal of irritant sources and allergen habitats from your household. They are also not a substitute for thorough and regular cleaning of your household environment. Selecting the right air purifier system can help complement and enhance your efforts to reducing airborne particulate matters, as well as maintain a healthier indoor breathing environment.

Room Humidifier

A room humidifier can help raise the level of humidity or moisture in the air. Increasing the humidity in the home helps eliminate the dry air that can irritate and inflame the respiratory passages in the nose and throat. A room humidifier can help relieve the discomfort of colds and the flu, and help people who suffer from asthma.

When humidified air is breathed in, the water vapor adds moisture to secretions in the upper airway. This makes the secretions more fluid so it may be easier to cough them up. A humidifier can work only for the upper airway. Water vapor droplets made by a humidifier do not usually reach the lower airways, which include the trachea, or windpipe, and the lungs.

In the past, a steam humidifier was commonly used. A newer humidifier, also known as a vaporizer, uses special energy waves to break water down into a vapor. This results in smaller droplets than were possible with a steam humidifier. The energy waves also kill any bacteria or mold that may be in the water or the machine.

A special type of humidifier called a nebulizer can be used to deliver medication to the airway. A nebulizer is often used to treat asthma. It generates smaller water vapor droplets that are able to reach the small airways in the lungs. Certain medications, such as albuterol, can be dissolved in water and given with a nebulizer.

The medications are then able to reach the lungs in greater concentration than if taken by mouth. A new approach is to give some antibiotics by nebulizer. This type of humidifier seems to work very well on lower airway infections in children with cystic fibrosis a serious inherited condition that damages the lungs. A room humidifier may be just the help you need.

America Health Watch

America loves fast food. Last year, consumers spent billions of dollars on the hamburger industry alone. Corporate giants such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King all boast of multi-million dollar incomes each year.

Why?

Because their foods are delicious! Americans everywhere love the rich flavors of gigantic Big Macs and king-sized Whoppers. Our mouths water and noses flare at the enticing smell of a Bacon Double Burger Classic- a popular burger layered with melted cheese and tender bacon strips. Add a large batch of hot, sizzling French fries, and you have a combo meal worth billions of dollars to the American public. Indeed many of us love fast food!

But what has our country gained from its huge appetite for greasy foods? I can think of three problems-three problems that have stood coldly on America’s doorstep. These problems have destroyed the lives of millions of Americans over the past decade.

They are: 1) Obesity 2) High Blood Pressure and 3) Heart Disease. Strangely enough, American consumers will continue to satisfy their appetites for greasy chicken dinners, colossal burgers, salty French fries, and dozens of other fast foods. But the biggest threat is that these three health problems, if left unchecked, will bring more pain, more suffering, and higher death rates to the American population.
Obesity: Numerous studies have pointed to what causes obesity (condition of being overweight). Two major causes are: 1) over eating of high-fat foods, and 2) lack of exercise. With our country’s yearly spending on fast food, it is no surprise that more than 60% of Americans aged 20 years and older are overweight. Obesity has also been found to cause diabetes. Though the condition has been proven a hereditary disease, physicians agree that diabetes is often triggered by the patient’s choice of foods. In 2002, treatment of diabetes totaled 23.2 billion U.S. dollars. But being overweight can cause more health problems than just diabetes. Obesity is also a leading cause of high blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure (HBP): Over the years, tests have shown that most diets high in salt lead to cases of high blood pressure. At the turn of this century, this condition was listed as the main cause of death in 227,000 cases. Extra salt on our fries may seem tempting. But a less tempting thought is that high blood pressure contributes to 75% of all strokes and heart attacks. The danger with this condition is that many Americans are unaware that they have high blood pressure. Still, HBP is lethally harmful to anyone who has it. If left untreated, the con
